Whitchurch Silk Mill
Set in the picturesque village of Whitchurch visit to the silk mill is such a treat! Take yourself back in time and see how silk was traditionally made and it's history. The Mill is built on Frog Island, around which the River Test and its tributary flow. The crystal clear waters have provided the Mill with power for over 200 years, by driving the cast iron waterwheel, which was made in the 1890s.
The Mill has a lovley cafe, shop and gardens.

Beale Park Wildlife, Play & Riverside Fun

The living rain forest Hampstead Norreys
The living rain forest is the perfect place for those rainy days that tend to pop up in England!!! Suitable for all ages the living rainforest is situated in the picturesque village of Hampstead Norreys and has created the most wonderful jungle experience transporting you to a completely different world! With an array of tropical plants and animals including birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish there is so much to see and do!
The Living rain forest also has a lovely shop, cafe, outdoor playground and garden!

Finkley Down Farm Andover
Finkley Down Farm is the best farm park around!!!!! With a myriad of activities indoor and out Finkley has something for all ages! Animals and petting galore, from baby bunnies and chicks to lambs, ponies and goats!! Finkley is your place! With indoor soft play and all kinds of outdoor play activities including sandpits, swings, slides, trampolines, tractors and zipwires Finkley literally has everything you can think of and so much more inlcuding a lovely cafe for lunch, drinks and snacks!

Newbury Canal Boat Trips
The Kennet & Avon Canal runs right through the heart of Newbury, making it a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing canal boat trip. From Newbury Wharf you can join scheduled cruises that glide through the town and into the surrounding countryside. The journey typically takes you past Newbury Lock, under historic bridges, and through a working swing bridge, giving a real sense of the canal’s heritage.
Public trips usually last around an hour to an hour and a half, with friendly crew on board to share insights into the canal’s history and daily life on the water. Onboard facilities such as seating, light refreshments, and a small bar make the cruise comfortable and enjoyable for families and visitors of all ages.
For something different, horse-drawn boat trips are also available in the area. These offer a slower, more traditional experience, where the boat is gently pulled along by a shire horse along scenic stretches of the canal. It’s a charming way to step back in time and enjoy the peace of the waterways.
4 Kingdoms, Headly
4 Kingdoms is a family-run adventure park and farm, set on the Hampshire–Berkshire border in Headley. It’s designed especially for families with younger children, offering a mix of indoor and outdoor fun across more than 20 acres.
The park is split into themed areas – the “kingdoms” – each with its own attractions. You’ll find pedal boats on the lake, an indoor soft play barn, giant slides, climbing frames, crazy golf, go-karts, sandpits, a mini train ride, and an animal farm where children can meet and feed friendly farm animals. Seasonal events, such as Easter egg hunts, Halloween trails, and Christmas experiences with Santa, are a big draw.

North Wessex Downs AONB
We are absolutely priviledged to sit within the the North Wessex Downs AONB. Not sure what the AONB is? it's a protected area, an 'area of outstanding natural beauty' that cannot be changed without permission bcause it is so special. It's one of the last dark skies areas in britain where star gazing opportunities are EVERYWHERE!!!! :)
From remote, rolling downland to picture postcard villages the North Wessex Downs are truly special. Undoubtedly among Britain’s most beautiful landscapes, they are somewhere to be treasured, protected and enjoyed. Straddling four counties and often unheralded, this is an area united by a single factor – chalk.

Savernake forest Marlborough
Discover ancient trees and a mosaic of habitats in this historical forest!
Located south of Marlborough, Savernake Forest is rich in history and has lots to explore. It is a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as a registered important historic park, making it the perfect forest for an exciting and educational day out.
The history of the forest goes back for a thousand years or more. Its long history of human management has created an outstanding legacy of old trees, rich landscapes, and diverse habitats. One of the country's oldest trees, the Big Bellied Oak, is very noticeable on the side of the A346.

YES Watership Down is a real place not just a movie or in a fictional book! and Yes!! you can really walk where the rabbits settled in the end on top the Hill under the old Oak tree!

Snelsmore Common
Snelsmore Common Country Park lies 2.5 miles north of Newbury town centre and provides the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and wildlife with its network of woodland walks and heathland.
Keep your eyes peeled for Exmoor and New Forest ponies grazing as you explore the waymarked routes, and look and listen out for some rare bird species too, including nightjar, woodlark and tree pipit. You may even spot an adder, grass snake, common lizard, or slow-worm if you’re eagle-eyed.
If you visit in August or September, you’ll see three types of heather in full flower, and the summer months are ideal for spotting dragonflies. In Spring, the sounds of birdsong fill the air and the woodland is carpeted with beautiful bluebells.
There’s even a popular café on site to buy refreshments after a good dose of fresh air and exercise, and a picnic area if you’d prefer to bring your own.
From Snelsmore Common, the footpath network can take you to the ruins of the magnificent Medieval Donnington Castle, where the spectacular views across Newbury and beyond make every step worthwhile!

Greenham and Crookham common
Just minutes from your stay lies Greenham and Crookham Commons, one of Berkshire’s most iconic and beautiful open spaces. This vast heathland nature reserve is rich in wildlife, from grazing cattle and Exmoor ponies to rare birds, butterflies and late?summer orchids amid heather and gorse. It’s perfect for walks, picnics and exploring with dogs in tow. The historic Greenham Control Tower now serves as a visitor centre and café with panoramic views, where you can relax after discovering the Cold War history of the former RAF base and its famous Women’s Peace Camp — a powerful site of protest for nearly two decades. Fans of film will also recognise parts of the old airfield and bunkers where Star Wars scenes were shot. A visit here combines nature, history, culture, and discovery for all ages.

Welford Park
Welford Park is steeped in history. Once the site of a monastery until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, then turned deer-hunting lodge of Henry VIII, Welford Park found its way into the hands of Sir Francis Jones Kt, Lord Mayor of London in 1618 and has remained in the family since.
The grounds and the house were largely planned by Charles Eyre and he was responsible for planting a spectacular collection of specimen trees, many of which you can still see today.
Welford Park Estate has a vibrant social community and a productive rural enterprise, focused on protecting the land and farming in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way.
The family are delighted and privileged to be able to share the house’s history by welcoming guests throughout the year for special events. The snow drops from January to March are not to be missed!

Donnington Castle
Discover the ancient ruins of Donnington Castle! Standing proudly on a hilltop on the edge of Snelsmore Common, just outside Newbury, Donnington Castle offers a magical glimpse into England’s medieval past. Highclere Castle
Highclere Castle, (aka Downton Abbey) set in the rolling Hampshire countryside near Newbury, is one of England’s most iconic stately homes. The castle has been the family seat of the Earls of Carnarvon since the late 17th century, but it is best known today as the filming location for the television series Downton Abbey. Its striking Victorian architecture, designed by Sir Charles Barry, the same architect behind the Houses of Parliament, makes it instantly recognisable.
The castle has the most beautiful gardens and grounds with a lovely teashop too and events throughout the year such as Easter egg hunts and the battle proms outdoor concert and of course not forgetting the incredible Egyptian museum in the cellar!

Newbury was first mentioned as being a town with permission to hold a market and fair in as far back as 1079, almost 1,000 years ago. It’s a tradition that the town has nurtured and maintained and there are now a number of wonderful markets to choose from when you visit Newbury.
With it's quaint old buildings, highstreet and Kennet and Avon river/canal, Newbury is a great place to visit and has many lovely shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. There are lots of attractions in and around Newbury including museums, castles, play parks, farm parks not to mention the beautiful countryside of Hampshire Berkshire and Wiltshire that surround it teaming with cute little villages and pubs.

The Chase National Trust woodland Woolton Hill
The Chase is a National Trust woodland less than a mile away from Hollington. The Chase is fabulous for children adults and families alike, with winding paths perfect for walking, dogs and cycling. At the heart of the chase is a wide stream perfect for picnicking next to, wading, building dams, spotting wildlife and catching little fish leading to a small pretty lake and bridge.
The Chase is a 20 minute walk or two minute drive and is conveniently located next to the pub the 'Rampant Cat', perfect for a pub lunch stop if you can't be bothered making that picnic!
Beacon Hill Whitway
Beacon Hill in Whitway offers one of the most striking panoramic views in Hampshire. Rising above the surrounding countryside, the hilltop provides sweeping vistas across rolling farmland, wooded valleys, and the patchwork fields of the North Wessex Downs. On a clear day you can see for miles in every direction, with the Kennet Valley and even Highclere Castle visible from the summit. The panoramic views into Wiltshire, Berkshire and Hampshire are quite stunning! You can even see over to Watership Down, the hill and the Oaktree where the rabbits in the film and book settled at the end.
One of the best places to fly a kite or take a picnic Beacon Hill is also the resting place of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who found the tomb of Tutankhamun. Looking down over his ancestral home Highclere castle, is the Earl's own tomb featuring an inscription from Tutakhamun's tomb which he was instrumental in finding in 1922. Old local legend says, that the 5th Earl of Carnarvon was buried upside down to get rid of the Mummy's curse!!! do you think it's true???

Woolton Hill Board Walk
Hollington is home to some beautiful riverside and countryside trails, one of the most enjoyable being the local boardwalk that takes you through the peaceful wetlands on the edge of the village. This raised wooden path winds its way through meadows and marshland, offering a chance to enjoy the local countryside and orchid trail in the spring and summer months.
The board walk leads onto further beautiful countryside which usually end up in one of our local good pubs! (See pub guide)
